How hard are escape rooms? At Questrooms each game shows its difficulty with lock icons from 1 to 5, where 1 is the easiest and 5 the hardest. Most games sit at 2 to 4, and first-timers do well at 2 or 3. One customer asked us: "Which of these has the lowest difficulty?" This guide lists every game by level, explains why a 12+ game can be harder than an 18+ one, and helps your group choose.
How hard are escape rooms for beginners?
Escape rooms are manageable for beginners when the level fits. You need no special knowledge, only logic and teamwork, and the game master gives clues when your team asks. At Questrooms a first-time group does well with a game at difficulty 2 or 3 of 5, such as Mission Sigma VR, Jungle Quest VR or Horror Escape.
A higher level means harder puzzles and more pressure on the 60-minute clock. A lower level gives a team more time to enjoy the story. When you pick a game in the booking calendar, the lock icons on the game card show the level.
What do the difficulty locks mean?
The lock icons on each Questrooms game card show difficulty on a scale from 1 to 5: 1 is the easiest and 5 the hardest. The scale is the same for classic rooms, VR games and outdoor games, so you can compare any two games directly. Age and fear level are shown separately.
| Locks | Games | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Smash Point KIDS VR | Kids from 8, arcade action more than puzzles |
| 2 | Time Travellers, Jungle Quest VR, Jungle Quest KIDS VR, Mission Sigma VR | First game, families, dates |
| 3 | Horror Escape, Horror Escape TEENS, Survival VR, Signal Lost VR, Sanctum VR, House of Fear 2 VR, Chernobyl VR, Magic Portal | Beginners and mixed groups |
| 4 | Cyberpunk VR, Escape the Worlds, Dream Hackers VR (both parts), Operation Mindfall | Teams with a few games behind them |
| 5 | Russian Mafia, Prison Escape VR, Alice in Wonderland VR, Frozen Castle VR | Experienced teams that want a real challenge |
All games are listed with age and players on the classic escape rooms and VR escape rooms pages.
Is Jungle Quest VR the easiest VR game?
Jungle Quest VR is one of the easiest VR puzzle games at Questrooms, at difficulty 2 of 5, together with Jungle Quest KIDS VR and Mission Sigma VR. Only Smash Point KIDS VR is lower, at 1 of 5, and that game is cartoon arcade action with shooting rather than puzzles.
Jungle Quest VR is a world of floating islands and magical creatures from age 10, and it works for adults too.
Why can a 12+ game be harder than an 18+ game?
Age and difficulty measure different things. The age on the game card is a recommendation based on how fun and how demanding a game is for that age, while the locks measure only how hard the puzzles are. Russian Mafia is 12+ at difficulty 5, and Horror Escape is 18+ recommended at difficulty 3.
Russian Mafia has no horror at all, so a 12-year-old can play it, but its puzzles are the hardest of the classic rooms. Horror Escape gets its 18+ from the live actor and the darkness, not from its puzzles. If you are new to escape rooms and want Russian Mafia, come at least 3 players.
A level for every kind of group
Choose the level by the team's experience, not by the age of the youngest player. These starting points work at Questrooms:
- First escape room ever: level 2 or 3. Horror Escape, Time Travellers, Jungle Quest VR or Mission Sigma VR.
- Two or three games played: level 3 or 4. Signal Lost VR, Escape the Worlds or Cyberpunk VR.
- An experienced team: level 5. Russian Mafia, Prison Escape VR, Alice in Wonderland VR or Frozen Castle VR.
- Kids aged 8 to 12 with an adult: Time Travellers, or Jungle Quest KIDS VR from age 10, both at level 2.
If you still cannot decide, the game quiz suggests a game in 6 questions and about 45 seconds.
FAQ
What is the easiest escape room at Questrooms?
Smash Point KIDS VR has the lowest difficulty, 1 of 5, but it is an arcade game more than a puzzle game. The easiest puzzle games sit at 2 of 5: Time Travellers, Jungle Quest VR, Jungle Quest KIDS VR and Mission Sigma VR. All four suit a first game, and the game master gives clues on request.
What is the hardest escape room in Stockholm at Questrooms?
Four games have the highest difficulty, 5 of 5: Russian Mafia, the hardest classic room, and the VR games Prison Escape VR, Alice in Wonderland VR and Frozen Castle VR. They suit experienced teams. If your team is new and still wants Russian Mafia, come at least 3 players, with a maximum of 6.
Do the age and the difficulty mean the same thing?
No. The age on the game card is a recommendation based on how fun and demanding a game is for an age, while the lock icons from 1 to 5 show only how hard the puzzles are. Russian Mafia is 12+ at difficulty 5, while Horror Escape is 18+ recommended at difficulty 3, because of the fear, not the puzzles.
Is a level 5 game too hard for a first-time team?
It can be. A level 5 game has the hardest puzzles at Questrooms, and a first-time team usually gets more out of level 2 or 3. If your team still wants a challenge, the game master gives clues whenever you ask, and nothing bad happens if the 60 minutes run out before you finish.
