Jullov in Stockholm: Things to Do With Kids Over the Christmas Break

Jullov, the Swedish Christmas school break, starts just before Christmas and runs into January.

Jullov, the Swedish Christmas school break, starts just before Christmas and runs into January. It is two weeks of short days, public holidays and visiting relatives, and most families need a few activities that work whatever the weather. This guide gives you this year's dates, indoor and outdoor ideas, what suits different ages, and a plan for a jullov day, with VR and escape rooms at Questrooms on Södermalm.

Why does jullov need a plan?

Jullov is longer than the other school breaks and includes several public holidays, so the days easily blur together. In December it is dark by half past three in Stockholm, and the weather can switch between snow, slush and rain. A few planned indoor activities keep the break from becoming only screen time.

Indoor activities during jullov

Classic choices in Stockholm are museums, swimming pools, bowling, cinemas, climbing gyms, indoor play centres and library holiday programmes. Many places change their opening hours around the holidays, so check each venue's website before you go.

At Questrooms, Kocksgatan 21A, a few minutes from Medborgarplatsen, all classic escape rooms and VR games are indoors. A game takes 60 minutes and the whole visit about 1.5 hours.

VR and escape rooms for kids

  • Smash Point KIDS VR (8+): a cartoon-style VR arena game where up to 6 players compete all against all over 10 rounds.
  • Time Travellers (ages 8–12, 3–7 players): a classic escape room with no scary content. A parent plays with the kids in the room.
  • Jungle Quest KIDS VR (10+): a friendly puzzle adventure among floating islands. Under 12, an adult plays along.
  • Frozen Castle VR (12+): a castle frozen in time, a storm and a team that has to work together. A good fit for winter.

Activities for teens

Teens often want to do something with friends. At Questrooms, at least one responsible adult must be on site for players under 18, and waiting in the reception is fine.

  • Horror Escape TEENS (ages 13–17): the teen version of our horror room, with more light and fewer sound effects. Requires parental consent.
  • Escape the Worlds (13+): a VR series with several worlds and adjustable difficulty.
  • BACK-TO-BACK: 7–10 friends play in two connected VR rooms, together or team against team.

When relatives are visiting

Jullov often means cousins, grandparents and friends visiting at the same time. An activity where several generations can join makes the day easier.

One room takes 2–6 players. If you are more, split across two rooms playing at the same time, for example a VR game for the younger ones and a classic room for the older ones, and meet afterwards. If your guests come from abroad, instructions are available in both Swedish and English.

Outdoors during jullov

If it is dry and light, you can go outside. Operation Mindfall is an AR game on the streets of SoFo for ages 16 and up. It can be played with umbrellas, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before start. It gets dark early, so book a slot in the middle of the day.

A plan for a jullov day

  1. Morning: a museum or swimming pool. Start early.
  2. Lunch: on Södermalm, near Medborgarplatsen.
  3. Afternoon (about 1.5 hours): a VR game or Time Travellers at Questrooms. Arrive 15 minutes early for the briefing.
  4. Evening: a film at home. Now you have something to talk about.

Price and booking

The price depends on how many you are, and the more players, the lower the price per person. Current prices and party packages are on kids and families.
