Team survival is a group activity where the team gets a problem, limited resources and a clock that keeps running. You do not get further unless you share information and decide together. In Stockholm, the format exists both in VR and outdoors with augmented reality. This guide explains what team survival is, how it differs from ordinary team building, what happens in a group under pressure, and how to choose the right format for your company or group.
What is team survival?
Team survival is a challenge that puts the group in a scenario where you have to survive, get out or stop something before time runs out. You have a clear goal, little time and too little information for one person to manage alone. The task only gets solved if the team shares what each person finds.
At Questrooms the format exists in Survival VR, where your plane crashes on a deserted island in the Pacific. The cockpit transmitter is broken, the weather is turning, and you need shelter, food and a way to send an emergency signal. You search for resources, solve problems to fix the transmitter and find a way to call for help.
How is survival different from ordinary team building?
Ordinary team building often relies on exercises everyone knows are exercises: a lecture, a workshop, or a game with clear rules and nothing at stake. The survival format gives the group a story and a problem that asks you to act, not only discuss.
The difference is that the task is real inside the game. The format creates situations where participants need to communicate, prioritise and make decisions together. That describes how the game works, not a promise about what the team becomes afterwards. But it is why it feels different from an exercise in a conference hotel.
Time pressure
The clock is what makes survival survival. In Survival VR you have 60 minutes. In the outdoor game Operation Mindfall, the mission takes a maximum of 2 hours.
Time pressure forces choices. Do you explore the beach or solve the puzzle in front of you? Should two people work on the same thing or split up? With unlimited time, a group can discuss everything. With 60 minutes, someone has to say "this is what we do now".
Role distribution
Nobody assigns roles in advance, but they almost always appear. Someone starts gathering information. Someone tests solutions quickly. Someone keeps track of the time and of what is already done.
What is interesting for a group is seeing who takes which role under pressure, and whether roles change when something does not work. In an escape room or VR game you notice it straight away: if three people stare at the same lock while nobody searches the rest of the room, you lose time.
Communication
In a survival game, information sits with different people. One sees a number, another finds the lock it fits. If you do not communicate, the two never connect.
In VR you play in the same physical room and see each other as characters in the game, so most of it happens by talking. Short, clear messages work best: what did you find, where is it, what do you need. Groups that talk a lot but say little usually notice quickly.
Problem-solving as a team
The puzzles in a survival game rarely have a one-step solution. You need to combine objects, clues and what you have learned about the environment. That is exactly where the group is needed, because different people see different solutions.
If you get stuck you can take hints, and it is up to you how many. That means groups with different levels of experience can still move forward, and everyone can contribute.
How does the format work for companies?
For companies, the survival format works as an activity where the whole group is active at the same time. At Questrooms, larger groups split into teams of 2–6 people who play different rooms simultaneously, or in rounds with fika in between.
The team building packages:
- Team Start (10–13 people): 2 groups play at the same time, 1.5 hours.
- Team Boost (13–20 people): 3 groups play at the same time, 1.5 hours.
- Business Challenge (21–26 people): 4 groups, two play while two have fika in the lounge, then swap, 2.5 hours.
- Corporate Takeover (27–38 people): 6 groups, three play while three have fika, then swap, exclusive use of the venue, 2.5 hours.
For more than 38 people we put together a custom proposal, often with Quest-to-Go, where we bring Operation Mindfall to your location and 19–200+ people play at the same time.
VR survival vs. physical survival activities
Physical survival activities, like survival courses, obstacle races or a weekend in the forest, test the group through the body, the weather and endurance. VR survival tests the group through problems, time and information.
| VR survival | Physical survival activity | AR outdoors | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example at Questrooms | Survival VR | Not offered by us | Operation Mindfall |
| Where | Indoors on Södermalm | Often in nature, outside the city | The streets of SoFo, or your own venue with Quest-to-Go |
| Time | 60 minutes of play | A few hours to several days | Max 2 hours |
| Physical effort | Low | Often high | Walking |
| Weather | Does not matter | Decisive | Playable in rain, free cancellation up to 24 h before |
| Age | 10+ | Varies | 16+ |
VR fits when you want the same pressure without demands on fitness, equipment or a full day in the forest.
Which format suits which group?
- Small team, 2–6 people: Survival VR. One room, 60 minutes of play, about 1.5 hours in total.
- 7–10 people who want to be in the same game: BACK-TO-BACK, where our two VR rooms connect. Up to 8 players in co-op, or up to 10 in two teams competing against each other.
- Teams who want to be outside and moving: Operation Mindfall, 2–10 players, 16+, difficulty 4 out of 5.
- Large groups or your own venue: Quest-to-Go, 19–200+ people, 60–90 minutes of play and an award ceremony at the end.
- Mixed group where not everyone wants the same level: split across rooms at the same time, for example Survival VR, Frozen Castle VR and a classic escape room.

Frequently asked questions
What is team survival? Team survival is a group activity where the team gets a scenario, limited resources and a time limit. At Questrooms in Stockholm, the format exists in two games. In Survival VR your plane crashes on a deserted island and you have to fix a transmitter within 60 minutes. In the AR game Operation Mindfall you stop a threat on the streets of SoFo.
Does the survival format work for team building? Yes, as an activity. The format creates situations where participants need to communicate, prioritise and make decisions together. Questrooms has packages for 10–38 people where teams play at the same time or in rounds with fika, and Quest-to-Go for 19–200+ people.
Do you need to be fit for VR survival? No. Survival VR is built on problem-solving and communication, not fitness. You move around a VR room with a headset and hand controllers. No VR experience is needed: the game master goes through the equipment before you start. The age limit is 10+.
How many can play at the same time? One VR game takes 2–6 players. With BACK-TO-BACK, up to 10 can play across two connected VR rooms. Operation Mindfall takes 2–10 players per team. With Quest-to-Go, 19–200+ people play at the same time at your own location.
