VR Horror in Stockholm: Why Virtual Fear Feels So Close

VR horror is a horror game you play from the inside, with a headset on and the whole scene around you.

VR horror is a horror game you play from the inside, with a headset on and the whole scene around you. In a VR horror escape room in Stockholm, your group explores a dark setting, solves puzzles together and reacts to what happens in 360 degrees. This guide explains why VR makes horror feel so intense, how it compares with a physical horror room and which formats exist. It also shows how to pick a game at Questrooms if your group is new to VR or not everyone loves horror.

What is VR horror?

VR horror is a virtual reality game built around fear and tension. You wear a headset, look and move around a digital environment, and interact with objects using your hands and controllers. In a VR horror escape room, you also solve puzzles as a team against the clock, usually 60 minutes, while the setting works on your nerves.

At Questrooms, VR games run on Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3s headsets. Your group plays together in the same physical room on Södermalm, so you can talk, point and help each other the whole time.

Why does your brain treat a virtual space differently?

Your brain treats a VR space differently because it fills your entire field of view and reacts when you move. On a screen, there is always a frame and a living room around it. In VR, the frame disappears. When you turn your head, the world turns with you. When you crouch, the floor gets closer.

That feedback makes the space feel present, even though you know it is a game. It does not replace reality, and it does not scare everyone the same way. But it removes the easy distance a TV or cinema gives you, and that is where the tension comes from.

Sound, 360° space and no familiar reference points

Three things make VR horror feel close:

  • Sound with direction: a noise from behind you actually sounds like it is behind you. You have to turn around to check.
  • A 360° space: there is no "off-screen". Anything can be to your left, above you or in the corridor you just left.
  • No familiar reference points: you cannot see the sofa, the window or the lamp you know is there. Your sense of where you are comes only from the game.

Put together, that means your attention is spread in every direction while you are also trying to read a clue or open a lock. That split attention is what keeps VR horror tense.

VR horror vs. a classic horror escape room

VR horror escape room Classic horror escape room
Setting Digital, can change instantly Physical set you can touch
Where the fear comes from 360° visuals and directional sound Real darkness, props and a live actor
Group size at Questrooms 2–6 per game (House of Fear 2 VR max 4) 3–6 in Horror Escape
Age at Questrooms 12+ or 15+ depending on game Strictly 18+ in Horror Escape
Physical contact None, you are alone with your group None, the actor never touches players
Good for Groups who want intense visuals and new worlds Groups who want a real room and live atmosphere

Neither is "scarier" for everyone. Some players react more to a real dark corridor in Horror Escape. Others react more to a VR monastery where sound comes from every direction. If your group is split, book one of each and compare afterwards. Our team often suggests exactly that: a scary theme night with Horror Escape and Sanctum VR.

What types of VR games are there: horror, survival, escape?

At Questrooms, the VR escape rooms fall into a few rough types. Here are the relevant ones for a group looking for tension:

  • Horror: House of Fear 2 VR sends you as forensic investigators into an abandoned psychiatric clinic to find a missing patient. It is 15+, max 4 players, and our team usually calls it the scariest VR room. Sanctum VR (12+) takes you to an abandoned monastery tied to a cult. It is darker and more mysterious than jump-scare scary, and the puzzles are a little trickier.
  • Survival: in Survival VR your plane crashes on a deserted island and you need resources, shelter and a working transmitter. Tension comes from pressure and problem-solving, not from fear. It is 10+.
  • Dark atmosphere without horror: Chernobyl VR (12+) sends you back to the night of the disaster. Tense and story-driven, less scary than the horror rooms.
  • Action: Dream Hackers VR: The Book of Memories (13+) mixes puzzles with fighting living nightmares inside a shared dream.

Which VR horror game should beginners choose?

Beginners should start with a game where the tension does not block the puzzles. No VR experience is needed at Questrooms: the game master goes through the equipment and controls before you start, and you can take hints during the game.

A simple way to choose:

  • Never played VR, want mild tension: Chernobyl VR or Survival VR.
  • Played before, want real horror: House of Fear 2 VR.
  • Want mystery more than jump scares: Sanctum VR.

If you wear glasses, the headsets fit over most frames. If yours are very large, you can play without them and we adjust the lenses.

How do you play VR horror as a group?

You play in the same room, each with a headset, and you see each other as characters in the game. Talking is the main tool: one person reads a code, another finds the lock, a third keeps watch on the door.

For groups of 7–10, BACK-TO-BACK connects our two VR rooms with a total of 10 VR stations. Up to 8 players can join the same session in co-op mode. Or up to 10 can split into two teams, for example 5 vs 5, and race through the same mission. To book, choose VR Room 1 and VR Room 2 at the closest times and write "Back to back" in the comment.

During VR gameplay, staff are not inside the room with you. The game master gives instructions before you start and follows the game through cameras.

What if someone in the group does not like horror?

Nobody has to play something they do not want to. Split the group across two games that run at the same time. The horror fans take House of Fear 2 VR or Horror Escape. The others take a non-scary game such as Survival VR, Frozen Castle VR, Jungle Quest VR or Escape the Worlds. Everyone finishes around the same time and meets up afterwards.

If the group wants to stay together, pick a middle ground like Chernobyl VR or Sanctum VR, which are tense but not built around constant scares.

Frequently asked questions

Is VR horror scarier than regular horror? It depends on the person. VR removes the screen frame and surrounds you with sound and visuals in 360 degrees, which many people find more intense than a film. Compared with a physical horror room with a live actor, some players find VR scarier and some find it milder. Nobody can promise it will scare you.

Can beginners play VR horror? Yes. No VR experience is needed. The game master explains the headset and controls before the game, and you can ask for hints during the 60 minutes. For a first time, Chernobyl VR or Sanctum VR give tension without the most intense scares. House of Fear 2 VR suits groups ready for real horror.

How many can play together? Each VR game takes 2–6 players, except House of Fear 2 VR, which takes a maximum of 4. With BACK-TO-BACK, our two VR rooms connect: up to 8 players in the same co-op session, or up to 10 players split into two competing teams.

Are there VR games for people who don't like horror? Yes, most of them. Survival VR, Frozen Castle VR, Jungle Quest VR, Escape the Worlds and several others have no horror element. A group can split so the horror fans and the others play at the same time in different games.

Choose your VR horror game

Browse the VR escape rooms, pick a game that matches your group's nerve, and book a time that suits you. Bigger group or mixed tastes? Book BACK-TO-BACK or two games side by side, and write in the comment if you want help setting it up.
