The most important escape room tip is simple: say out loud what you find. Often it is not the puzzle that stops a group, but one person holding a clue someone else needs. Here are ten concrete tips for getting out, from the briefing to the last minute, plus what changes in a VR escape room.
1. Listen to the briefing
The game master explains the rules before you start. That is where you learn what you do not need to touch, how to ask for hints and what applies in that particular room. Two minutes of attention here saves ten minutes later. Ask questions if anything is unclear. The briefing is in English or Swedish.
2. Split up at the start
The first minutes are about seeing what the room contains. If everyone stands at the same box, you miss the rest. Divide the room: one person takes the shelves, one takes the desk, one takes the walls.
3. Say out loud what you find
"I have a key." "Here are four numbers." "This lock has letters." Short, clear messages connect clues. A number nobody mentions is a number that does not exist.
4. Keep everything you find in one place
Put the objects and notes you find in the same spot, for example on a table. Then everyone knows where to look when a puzzle needs something you already have.
5. Track what is solved
Used keys and opened locks can be set aside so nobody tries them again. A simple system saves a lot of time.
6. Let one person watch the clock
That person calls out when half the time has gone and when there are ten minutes left. Then the group knows when it is time to take a hint instead of guessing.
7. Take hints in time
There is no point in standing still for ten minutes. At Questrooms, it is up to you how many hints you take. Hints let everyone contribute, including first-time players.
8. Swap tasks when you are stuck
If you have stared at the same puzzle for a long time, let someone else look. Fresh eyes often see the obvious straight away.
9. Think simple first
The answer is more often close than far away. Try the simple reading before building complicated theories.
10. Choose the right room for your group
The right room makes all the difference. At Questrooms:
- Russian Mafia: calmer but a little trickier. We recommend at least 3 players if you are new.
- Horror Escape: more action and a fear factor, so the puzzles themselves are a little easier. Recommended age 18+.
- Survival VR: exciting but not scary, a good first VR game.
Tips for VR escape rooms
VR works like a classic escape room, with a few differences:
- Talk more. You see each other as characters, but it is harder to point at details. Describe what you see and where.
- Look around in 360 degrees. Clues can be above you, behind you or on the floor.
- Listen. Sound in VR has direction and can show where something is happening.
- Glasses are fine. The headsets fit over most glasses.
If you are 7–10, you can play BACK-TO-BACK in two connected VR rooms, together or team against team.
How big should the group be?
One room takes 2–6 players. For beginners, 3–6 works well: more people find more clues, but there is still room for everyone to do something. The more players, the lower the price per person.
